Can You Laugh Your Way to Health and Happiness?
Can laughter bring you good health, greater happiness, and higher fitness? The temptation is to say “of course!” Seems intuitively accurate. And to a degree the answer is “yes.” Though stick with your QiDANCE and QiFORZE classes if you have the goal to maximize your health, happiness, and fitness. Most studies on the subject of laughter are relatively small, so scientists hesitate to say that laughter can supplant exercise or directly confer good health. However, research does point to similar benefits.
Both a good laugh and a cardio workout:
-activate the pleasure pathways of the brain (sounds happy already!)
-enhance the immune system
-help the heart
-build the lungs
-break up facial muscle tension (kind of an interesting added benefit, don’t you think?)
The stress hormones, cortisol and epinephrine actually decrease during and following a good guffaw. Guess what other times stress hormone levels drop? Did you guess it? Post exercise.
So imagine the double down benefit of combining a workout with a laugh or two. If you want to reduce stress in your life, then this combo is for you! As well, according to Dr. William Sears in his book, Prime-Time Health, optimists outlive pessimists, with optimists considered happier. The case is really building to find workouts that inject some humor aspect--that are not just “results-oriented” or intense.
Put the odds in your favor to increase your fitness level and overall happiness. Include humor in your daily exercise plan. Bring fun into your Qignition classes, which were designed to allow for joy. Find people to work out with who bring a smile to class, prompt a giggle, or appreciate a good sense of humor.
Laugh stat — children laugh an average of more than 400 times a day. Adults have toned that down to logging about one dozen laughs daily.
